TASC-RestoreMed Kicks Off in Crete: Uniting the Mediterranean for Ocean Restoration

The TASC-RestoreMed project officially set sail in Crete last week, marking the beginning of a four-year journey to restore the Mediterranean’s ocean and freshwater ecosystems by 2030. Hosted by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), the kick-off meeting gathered all consortium partners to align strategies, share visions, and build a strong foundation for collaborative impact.

Funded under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”, TASC RestoreMed is designed to accelerate community-led, solution oriented restoration across the Mediterranean Basin.

The project will channel significant Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP), Technical Support and Networking Opportunities, empowering local actors, researchers, start-ups, and NGOs to implement place-based solutions that merge ecological restoration with innovation, policy alignment, and social inclusion.

During the two-day meeting, representatives from all partner institutions, HCMR, Impact Hub Athens and NTUA (Greece), CIIMAR (Portugal), CTN (Spain), Frederick University (Cyprus), University of Maribor (Slovenia), VLIZ (Belgium), F6S (Ireland), and Infordata Sistemi (Italy), gathered to present their work packages, exchange insights, and plan the upcoming Open Call for innovative projects to be launched in the coming months.

The discussions focused on the project’s holistic approach to restoration, integrating advanced tools such as the Blue Doughnut Framework and the Ocean Digital Twin, while ensuring communities remain at the heart of transformation.

The meeting also served as a platform to define the project’s communication and dissemination strategies, ensuring that its impact resonates across science, policy, and society.

The event also marked the official presentation of the project’s brand identity and the launch of the website’s landing page and social media channels, setting the foundation for ongoing communication and engagement with Mediterranean stakeholders. These platforms will serve as hubs for sharing progress, stories from the field, and opportunities for collaboration throughout the project’s lifecycle.

As the project begins, TASC RestoreMed stands as a collective commitment to a shared Mediterranean future. one where local innovation, cross-border collaboration, and nature-based solutions drive tangible change for our blue planet.
